RAW I think that a wizard (who is not proficient in heavy armor), should not be able to cast spells while wearing a mithril version of a heavy armor piece. Though, thematically, I think even a wizard should be able to wear mithril as if we has proficiency with it. I'm basing this solely on the Bilbo's mithril armor (chain shirt) which doesn't look or feel cumbersome enough to impose on the ...

Wizard Spells Magic Items Monsters ... Personally I wouldn't allow mithral armor to be easily purchasable at all in my games, but it depends on the kind of game you're running. You are already making assumptions about it based on one setting you're familiar with, which isn't strictly helpful for the discussion at hand, although it is valuable input for some settings. RAW based on the utility ...

So, if my rogue who is not proficient in heavy armor wears mithril chain mail -- I want to say it would not matter that their STR is 10 (chain mail requires 13), and they would not have disadvantage on Stealth checks... but they would still have disadvantage on all other ability checks, all saving throws, and all attack rolls, and be unable to cast spells. Is that right?

3 thoughts on “ Why can a wizard cast spells in heavy armor and a barbarian cannot rage in the same? ” D. Walker says: Yes, Jeremy – we’re all well aware that these are two separate rules. A 15th level Cleric can easily spare a couple of Magic Vestment spells. This spell can be cast on the Wizard's clothes and on the Wizard's buckler, for a total armor bonus of +11. Reply. J. How do alteration armor spells work?

I know that in Skyrim, the Mage Armor perk makes alteration armor spells (i.e. stoneflesh) more effective when not wearing armor. Gameplay mechanics aside, why would a mage going into combat choose to wear robes/clothes over armor? Would an alteration armor spell really provide effective protection against weapons/projectiles? How do they actually protect the caster? These are all questions that I've wondered when seeing mages in TES wear no armor in heavy combat situations.
