In Freemasonry, the Masonic usage of the terms Boaz and Jachin originates from the Biblical account of King Solomon’s Temple. The master builder of the temple was Hiram Abiff a prominent figure in all our teachings. "1 Kings Chapters 6,7, and 8," describe the dimensions, construction, and dedication of the Temple.

The Masons also have 33 degrees and trace their craft back to the Phoenician King Hiram Abiff. This doesn’t mean by default that since we see the number 33 that there is some secret conspiracy in regards to the 33rd parallel and 33 degrees in Freemasonry, but it does bring up some interesting connections when you start studying both the Phoenicians and the Masons.

As mentioned in the previous point, a Mason who has attained the 32nd or 33 rd degree in ‘The Scottish Rite’ may be perceived as a high ranking Mason within that order but that would be of little significance to a ‘York Rite’ Mason, and would hold no influence of rank within a Craft Lodge.

In an earlier era, and along a parallel development, there existed a similar series of degrees that lead seamlessly into what we know of today as the 4th through 32nd Scottish Rite system. Sadly, only a few lodges today still practice the Rite’s precursor degrees, most notably the blue lodge in Louisiana, as the degrees are said to retain much of their earlier European and French roots [1] .

Masons who claim to be a 33rd Degree Mason do a disservice to those who have devoted their lives to the blue lodge only by making it seem like they are higher in degrees than those who choose not to be a member of Scottish Rite. I for example am a Master Mason which is 3rd degree. I also happen to be a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite.
