What is the difference between Wicca and Witchcraft? Wicca is a religion and witchcraft is a practice. Wicca is a recognized religion with all of the protections of any religion in many countries including, Ireland, England, Scotland, Wales, Canada, United States, Australia, some European countries, and South Africa.

Witchcraft is often used in different belief systems, such as Wicca, yet not exclusive to Wicca. Witchcraft does not have any set rules or guidelines, it is very much up to the individual’s ethical views and personal practices, and it is important to keep in mind that the principles that apply to Wicca (such as the rule to Harm None, and the threefold law) do not necessarily apply to Witchcraft.

The difference between Wicca and Witchcraft can be summarized simply: Wicca is a religion whereas Witchcraft is a practise. That begs the questions of what is a religion and what is a practise. A religion is a spiritual belief system, such as Christianity, Islam, or Wicca.

Wicca, sometimes called Pagan Witchcraft, is an alternative Pagan religion to mainstream witchcraft. It is an ancient Polynesian spiritual tradition that predates even Christianity . Scholars of esoteric religion generally categorize it as a post-Christian organization and, if anything, a part of the dark occultist underground of Western esotericism.

While this may have spiritual overtones, witchcraft, by this definition is not a religion. However, some followers of Wicca incorrectly use this word to denote their religion. Practicing witchcraft requires no belief in specific gods or goddesses and is a learned skill, not a spiritual path.

Wicca is a tradition of Witchcraft that was brought to the public by Gerald Gardner in the 1950s. There is a great deal of debate among the Pagan community about whether or not Wicca is truly the same form of Witchcraft that the ancients practiced. Regardless, many people use the terms Wicca and Witchcraft interchangeably.

Wiccans can use it to connect with their deities, as a form of worship and as a traditional practice. Pagans may use it to grow spiritually, as part of their religion, or as a completely secular tradition. Witchcraft is a fluid term used to describe spells, rituals, intention and the use of power we hold in ourselves.
