Kabbalah presents itself as secretive for at least three reasons. The first is because it borrows imagery heavily from the gnostic tradition, which in turn, has its sources in Greek mystery traditions.

(Primary reason): The study of Kabbalah and Hasidic mysticism—the latter reveals mysteries so profound the Kabbalists only hinted at them, and it explains them in laymen's terms)—is a preparation for the messianic age, when the human race will be preoccupied with the study of the deepest divine mysteries.

This shrewd serpent of old has so many “shops” and “flavors ...

When it started, the study of Kabbalah was secretive, especially among medieval Christians who feared the wrath of the Inquisition. After Aleister Crowley exposed the secrets of the Golden Dawn in the early 20th century, the cat was out of the bag, and Kabbalah began to be talked about among the religious intellectuals of the day.

To preface I know next to nothing about so called 'practical kabbalah'. But from the few things I have read about, things like face or palm reading, making a golem (essentially an android) or any other 'magical' practice seem to violate the prohibition of lo t'chashef (sorcery) 1 2 3. Why is this not so? 1 Devarim 18:10 2 Tur, Yorah Deah 179:13-16

Both kabbalah and the New Testament hold that God communicates the sublime interrelationships of his various components to limited human beings in terms they can understand from their own experience—concepts like the Sefirot, or like the New Testament's Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
