It’s based on your lived experience and is meant to express what you desire the most. Interestingly, personal mantras are not limited to individuals.

How to pick your mantra? Pick a word or phrase that calms you. Or pick a goal you have for yourself. For example, my words are what I am working towards and the ways in which I want to see myself: ‘calm and healthy.’. I worry that I am not healthy or might be getting sick, and I am working towards being more calm in my daily life.

More recently, however, I've heard the term “mantra” used much more in a business context, as in that “guiding principle” which inspires you to do whatever special things you do. In the past I might have called it a "motto," or a "creative strategy," but today: it's a mantra.
