What I heard from my kabbalah teacher many years ago is that if you try to perform magic you are deviating from the will of God and imposing your own will upon the universe. So it would be better to just follow the religion, study the holy books and be a pious man/woman than trying to do things your own way and fuck up God's plan for you.
