Jesus' prayers ("Not my will, but thine be done") were yielded to the Father--how unlike the demands that we place on our Lord when we expect Him to do our will! Instead of our way, Jesus' way seems to be "Pray thyself in me." Today, I invite you NOT to pray--but to yield to the Spirit, and let Him pray for you.

When God Said “Do Not Pray”. There are two instances in Scripture—that I’m aware of—when God told someone not to pray, for He would not hear their prayer. Moses is the first example, for though he’d been faithful to God most of his life, he was told by the Lord he’d not enter the land promised to Israel because of his disobedience ...

Doing so is a natural expression of caring; for me, it would be unnatural not do this. And not to do so because I can’t imagine how it works would be an act of intellectual arrogance – if I can’t imagine how something works, then it can’t work. So I don’t believe that God sometimes intervenes to answer prayer. But this doesn’t prevent me from thinking that prayer sometimes has effects, even though I can’t imagine how.

If you believed it were inappropriate to pray to Jesus, you would not ask the sinner to pray to Jesus.16 But believing it is proper to pray to Christ, you encourage the sinner to say a prayer to Him. This prayer to Jesus will be the beginning of a lifetime of fellowship between this new Christian and his Savior, whom he can commune with every day.

Contemplative spiritualists suggest Jesus practiced contemplative prayer. Though the Gospels portray that Jesus retreated away from the crowds and into solitude to pray, they do not record that Jesus prayed in a “mute language.” Donald Bloesch points out that, [A] close examination of the prayer life of our Lord would seem to indicate that His prayers were definitely petitionary and intercessory in nature.

I pray also that the eyes of my heart may be illumined by Your Word of truth, so that I may know more fully the hope to which I have been called. Give me a deeper understanding of what it actually meant for You to die on the cross for my sins. Give me a deeper reverence for Who You truly are. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.

esus taught that obedience and answered prayer are related: “If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it shall be done for you” (John 15:7, NASB). “Abiding in Christ” is sometimes explained in esoteric terms. But abiding is not mystical. It’s primarily volitional: a matter of mo - rality and ethics.
