It seems there are at least two layers to this question. One layer is cultural. Mystics tend to formulate their experience in terms of their culture’s ideology. Insofar as they do, then they will disagree across cultures: Not very many Buddhists from east Asia in 700 would speak of Jesus. A few, yes (there were Christians there then) but not many.

‘Religious Mysticism is only one half of mysticism, the other half is composed of the insane and both of these are co-located in the 'great subliminal or transmarginal region'. James investigated mystical experiences throughout his life, leading him to experiment with chloral hydrate (1870), amyl nitrite (1875), nitrous oxide (1882), and peyote (1896).

They have, they do and they will. So, yes I believe mystics actually exist. They can be officiating in a role or simply hold the space of the Numinous in their group or culture. Mystics include the shaman, the hermit, houngan, advanced monks, Sufis, contemplatives and the like, even faceless everyday folk.

So too, Christians may disagree among themselves over whether mystics of other traditions actually experience God or not. Some may believe that all mystics experience God, regardless of what mystics themselves be- lieve—i.e., mystics outside of Christianity simply misinterpret what they ex- perienced.

experience. In mysticism, we can find the "perennial philosophy", the common ground of all religious experience. There is a lot of evidence to support this train of thought. But mysticism, at least in the narrow definition of the term used here, is, was and probably always will be a minority interest among religious people.

Various mystics suggest such union is possible, and even claim it for themselves. For example, Meister Eckhart, one of the leading figures of medieval German mysticism, writes: [W]e are not wholly blessed, even though we are looking at divine truth; for while we are still looking at it, we are not in it.

Each morning, half-awake lads, together with their elders, are bathed in that curious atmosphere which is a blend of mysticism, gastronomic preoccupations and anticipations of a dole. That beginning of the day in the gompa gives us an idea of the character of the whole lamaist monastic life. In the latter we find also, always present, the same ill-assorted elements: subtle philosophy, commercialism, lofty spirituality and eager pursuit of coarse enjoyments!

Well, maybe not. In the first place, there is no linkage between mysticism and spiritualism. In the second place, Sightler gives us no definition of mysticism, a word notoriously hard to define, and one which when undefined is practically devoid of information. [18]
