Some people claim that the Bible contains esoteric keys that “unlock” hidden knowledge and allow a person to understand what the Bible “really” means. Naturally, this belief assumes that every other scholar, theologian, believer, and skeptic has been totally ignorant of these possibilities.

There really were around 40 authors of the Bible, but the Bible and tradition only call out around 35 by name. Ancient attribution and modern attribution aren’t even really in the same ball park. For example, the book of Isaiah may have been partially composed and arranged by Isaiah’s disciples long after Isaiah’s death.

The common link joining each of these Bible interpreters is that they all utilize an esoteric system of interpreting Scripture -- that is, each seeks hidden, secret, or inner spiritual meanings of Bible verses, especially the teachings of Jesus.

For example, if you read the Bible and consider it to be a literal retelling of an old story, you are reading the exoteric Bible. However, the Bible can also be read esoterically. The entire Bible – as well as many other ancient religious texts – can actually be read in 4 different languages.

Even for those books that are attributed to male names (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, Peter, Timothy, Isaiah, Jeremiah, etc) we don’t know precisely who the writers were. It was common in ancient times for literature to circulate anonymously and later be attributed to a public figure to give it more clout. Such was the case with the gospels.

We really don’t know any of the authors of the historical books in the Old Testament like Joshua, Judges, Ruth, Nehemiah or Esther. They were all written in the third person. The authors of the Poetical books are fairly well known—except for the book of Job. Again, writing in the third person, the author tells Job’s story.

He says there that the behavior expected of true followers of God far exceeds that of the OT law, but is centered on heart matters, not outward matters. So in matters of ethics, one ought to take Jesus words in Mark 7:21-23 with all seriousness and be on the conservative side of those behaviors and attitudes. Jesus does not contradict the OT, but completes it and puts back into place the intent, which was that the people of God would love him with all their"heart, soul, mind and strength ...

Although there is a human element in the writings–such as the writers' personal characteristics, writing style, vocabulary, expressed feelings, opinions, prayers, and even fears–inspiration contends that God still directed the authors so that all the words that were used were equally inspired of God, and were the ones God intended for us to have in order to know Him and His plan of salvation.
