“Lama Anagarika Govinda defined a mantra as a ‘tool for thinking,’ a ‘thing which creates a mental picture.'” (Foundations of Tibetan Mysticism, 1969) Govinda continued. “The mantra…is knowledge, the truth beyond right and wrong, real being beyond thinking and reflecting. What the mantra expresses in sound exists and comes to pass.”

"The use of mantra or the repetition of certain phrases in Pali is a highly common form of meditation in the Theravada tradition. Simple mantras use repetition of the Buddha’s name, "Buddho", [as "Buddho" is actually a title rather than a name] or use the "Dhamma", or the "Sangha", the community, as mantra words.

The term jumon is closely associated with mikkyo (i.e. esoteric Japanese Buddhist) traditions.

A mantra can be a sound like “ahhhhhh” or “ommmm” that you repeat in your mind while meditating. The sound of “ahhhhh” is supposed to be creative and can be used in morning meditation, and the sound of “ommmm” is supposed to be the sound of completion and can be used for evening or night time meditation.

Mantras can also be used as “mind protectors” while walking, doing the dishes, or even in sitting meditation. I often chant a mantra (internally) while I’m in an airplane taking off or landing, and I find this to be helpful in combating anxiety. Often, Buddhists will count the mantras they are chanting by telling beads on a “mala.”
